MAASIN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways Southern Leyte 1st District Engineering Office recently completed the widening of Canturing Bridge in Maasin City to complement the agency’s road expansion projects.
District Engineer Manolo Rojas said they allotted PHP87 million for the widening of five-span bridge with two abutments and five piers on pile-driven foundation, deck slab with concrete railings and approach slab on both sides.
“With the operations of Padre Burgos Port and Maasin City Port, large buses and rolling cargoes are plying our national highway. It has been observed that the existing two-lane bridges can no longer accommodate the increased traffic volume and larger vehicles. With the expansion of bridge from two lanes to four lanes, it can enhance road safety, alleviate traffic congestion, and facilitate smoother traffic flow,” Rojas said.
The widening of permanent bridges from two lanes to four lanes is among the major projects included in the 2024 General Appropriations Act approved by the central government.
